在2006年的时候，Apple正在设计着它的第一款手机，而Steve Jobs需要一些建议。Jobs对于无线通信部分有些疑问，于是他打了电话给当时Cingular Wireless(其后被AT&T合併)的COO，同时也是负责Apple与电信商之间合约签订的人，Ralph de la Vega。
“How do you make this device be a really good phone? I’m not talking about how to build a keyboard and things like that. But I’m saying the innards of a radio that worked well.”
“你们是怎样做出一只很棒的手机的?我不是说怎样设计键盘或是其他之类的玩意，而是说该怎样才能让无线通信的部分运作顺畅。”
Jobs在电话中问着。
AT&T有个1,000页的手册，详细说明了供应商应该如何针对他们的网络来最佳化手机设计。
在知道了这件事之后，Jobs说。
“Well, send it to me.”
“好吧，把那玩意寄给我。”
不过在de la Vega把文件寄出去差不多30秒之后，Jobs马上又打了电话给他。
“Hey, what the … ? What’s going on? You’re sending me this big document, and the first 100 pages have to do with the standard keyboard.”
“嘿，你这??这玩意是怎么回事啊?你把这份超大文件寄给我，但是前100页都在讲该怎样设计符合标准的键盘。”
de la Vega笑着回答：
“Sorry we didn’t take those first 100 pages out, Steve. Forget those 100 pages. Those don’t apply to you.”
“抱歉，Steve，我们忘了把前100页抽掉了。忘了那100页吧，那些玩意对你没用。”
“Okay”
“好吧。”
然后，Jobs就把电话挂了。
在这之后，Apple不需要遵守技术规格的消息立刻就开始在Cingular内部流传，当时的CTO也疯狂地打电话给de la Vega，说他允许Apple这样作根本就是疯了。
不过de la Vega已经在Jobs的办公室里签下了保密协议，协议中甚至对他的老板都不能透露细节，只能用最概要性的辞藻来描述这款手机。甚至是董事会成员们，在合约正式签下之前也从未看过这台机器。
de la Vega当时只是说：
“Trust me, this phone doesn’t need the first hundred pages.”
“相信我，这款手机不需要那前100页。”
